A snood scarf (also known as a cowl scarf) is a scarf made as a continuous loop. You simply pop it over your head, nothing to tie, tuck or adjust. Snoods are popular this year, with main retailers stocking them, they are stylish, add a lovely pop of colour to your wardrobe and are one of the easiest ways to stay warm. Here are six simple ways to wear one.

Snoods in a nutshell

  • A snood is a scarf in a closed loop, so it goes on in seconds and stays put

  • Wear it as a single loop, up as a hood, tucked into your coat or over a collar

  • Handwoven merino and cotton snoods are always a popular choice at craft fairs and can be found online here: Handwoven merino wool snoods | Luxury UK made | Emma Baker

What is a snood scarf?

A snood or cowl scarf, is a scarf woven and finished as a continuous loop. It has no ends to tie, tuck or trail in your coffee, and no fiddling with knots. You slip it over your head and you are ready to go.

Why are snoods so popular?

The best thing about a snood is how easy it is to wear. You don't need to adjust it, rearrange it or check it in the mirror. It sits where you put it, even on a blustery day, which makes it ideal for the school run, dog walks, commuting and chilly mornings at the market.

How do you wear a snood scarf? Six easy ways

Single loop, relaxed

Slip it over your head and let it rest loosely around you neck. It looks effortless and goes with everything from a winter coat to a favourite jumper.

Folded over for extra warmth.

Many of my handwoven snoods are big enough that they can be folded along the middle to give two layers of handwoven merino wool. Perfect for those chillier days when extra warmth is needed.

Tucked into your coat

Wear it close to your neck and tuck it inside your coat or jacket collar. It keeps the warmth in and looks neat and streamlined.

Wear a snood on the ski slopes

Wearing a merino wool snood traps a lovely layer of air around your neck. Tucked underneath your ski jacket it stops any chills from creeping in, or even powder snow after a fall.

Why choose a handwoven snood?

Shop-bought snoods are great, but there is something special about one made by hand. Every snood in my online shop is handwoven by me in Salisbury, Wiltshire, in colours and patterns you won't find on the high street. Most of my snoods are woven with merino lambswool but some are woven with cotton or a silk and wool blend. Merino wool is soft against the skin, warm without being heavy, and drapes beautifully, so it works well with all the styles above. Because each piece is woven in small quantities, its a little bit different from anything else out there.

A handwoven snood also makes a lovely gift, for a friend, a family member or yourself. It's practical and easy to wear, and it will keep its softness and colour for years.

A traditional scarf is a long strip that you wrap, knot or drape. A snood is a closed loop that you pull on over your head, so it stays in place without any tying or adjusting.
