Looking after, caring for and washing a handwoven scarf, shawl, snood or luxury accessory

  • All of my scarves, cowls and shawls can be gently spot washed if they become stained and can be shaken and hung up between wearing. Wool should not need washing frequently by following this approach.  Wool naturally draws moisture away from your body so you might want to let your scarf air after your have worn it.

  • Wool will felt if it is treated to hot water and/or changing water temperatures especially if it is agitated.  Therefore if you feel it is necessary to wash either a wool or cotton item I recommend very gentle handwashing in warm water, with minimal agitation.   Fill a sink with hand warm water and add a wool specific detergent.  Put your scarf in the water and leave it for a few minutes.  Don't overwork the agitation with your hands.  Drain the water and rinse.  Gently squeeze out the excess water before allowing it to dry naturally before pressing.

  • A lavender bag can also be placed over a hanger or in a wardrobe as this is said to deter moths.
