This handwoven merino wool triangle scarf is woven by Emma Baker on a floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire, in a multicolour checked twill design using blue, yellow, white, green and pink lambswool. The combination is vivid without being overwhelming - the checked structure gives the colours a rhythm and order that makes the scarf easy to wear with a wide range of outfits.
It is available in two versions, both cut from the same handwoven cloth but finished differently and varying slightly in size and colour placement.
Version A and Version B
Select your preferred version from the Design dropdown before adding to your basket.
- Version A - Longest dimension 112cm, depth from centre to point 50cm. The long edge is oversewn; the other two sides of the triangle have a natural fray edge, giving it a relaxed, artisan finish.
- Version B - Longest dimension 118cm, depth from centre to point 52cm. All edges are oversewn for a clean, neat finish. Slightly larger than Version A.
Why a Triangle Scarf?
A triangle scarf also called a neckerchief is compact enough to fold into a bag and pull out when needed, but substantial enough to add real warmth and colour around the neck. Its shape means it can be worn multiple ways: loosely knotted at the front, folded into a strip and tied at the side, draped over a collar, or looped through a bag handle. It works as well indoors over a jumper as it does outdoors under a coat.
The Twill Weave
The checked design is woven using a twill structure - a technique that creates a diagonal rib across the surface of the cloth. Twill gives the fabric a natural drape and a subtle surface texture that catches the light differently from a plain weave, adding depth to the multicolour design.
A Postable Gift
This is an accessible and considered gift. Because of its compact size it can be sent as a large letter, keeping postage costs low. If you would prefer it presented in a gift box, please contact Emma before purchasing and she will arrange this for a small additional fee.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you wear a triangle scarf?
The most common way is to fold the triangle in half along the longest edge to form a strip, wrap it around the neck, and knot or tuck the ends. Alternatively, wear it as a true triangle by draping the point down the front and knotting the two ends loosely at the back of the neck for a neckerchief look. It can also be tied at the side of the neck, worn over a collar, or attached to a bag handle for a flash of colour.
What is the difference between the fray edge and the oversewn edge?
Version A has a natural fray edge on two sides of the triangle - where the woven cloth has been cut, the threads are left to form a short fringe rather than being sewn down. This is a traditional handwoven finish that gives the scarf a relaxed, artisan character. Version B has all edges oversewn for a cleaner, more tailored finish. Neither is more or less durable; it is a matter of personal preference.
Is merino wool itchy?
No. Fine merino lambswool has a much smaller fibre diameter than standard wool, so the fibres bend against the skin rather than prickling it. Most people who find ordinary wool uncomfortable have no problem with fine merino worn directly against the neck.
How do I care for a merino wool triangle scarf?
Sponge wash small stains. For a full wash, handwash very gently in warm water with minimal agitation using a wool-safe detergent. Rinse once, press in a towel to remove excess water, and dry naturally before pressing lightly. Do not machine wash or tumble dry.
Is this scarf made in the UK?
Yes. The scarf is designed and handwoven by Emma Baker in her studio in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.
Do you ship internationally?
