A handwoven turquoise and teal merino snood - hand-dyed yarns, pick-up stick 3D texture, superwash wool.

This merino snood is woven by Emma Baker in Salisbury, Wiltshire on a rigid heddle loom using different hand-dyed yarns in a colour gradient from turquoise through teal to a pale soft green, with speckles of pink and burgundy running through the warp. The gradient is created by arranging the four yarns across the warp threads so the colours shift gradually from one end of the snood to the other.

The pick-up stick technique

As well as the gradient colour arrangement, this snood uses a pick-up stick to introduce a three-dimensional texture into the weave. A pick-up stick is a flat tool that manually lifts selected warp threads during weaving, creating additional sheds through which the weft passes in a supplementary pattern. The result is a fabric with a raised, textured surface that catches the light at different angles as the snood moves - visible in the product images as a subtle three-dimensional quality in the weave.

Superwash merino - gentle machine washable

The yarn is superwash-treated merino lambswool with a small amount of nylon for added strength and durability. Superwash treatment means the wool fibres have been processed to prevent felting, making this snood more practical than standard merino - it can be machine washed on a gentle/delicate cycle at 30°C rather than requiring careful hand washing. This is a genuine practical advantage worth knowing before purchase.

The colour gradient across four hand-dyed yarns gives this snood a visual depth that shifts in different lights - it is not simply ‘turquoise’ but a slow transition through the tones of a shallow sea. Presented in Emma Baker’s gold-embossed gift box, it makes a distinctive gift for a birthday, Christmas, graduation, or any occasion where something genuinely personal is wanted.
