A handwoven doubleweave checked merino shawl in purple, lilac and ecru - reversible, made by Emma Baker in Salisbury
This shawl is woven by Emma Baker on a floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using fine 2/17nm merino lambswool in a checked design with purple, lilac and ecru yarns with a hint of green accent. The structure is a doubleweave - two cloth layers built simultaneously on the loom, creating a shawl that is reversible and significantly warmer for its weight than a single-layer equivalent.
Airy two-layer warmth
The doubleweave structure builds two cloth layers simultaneously: a purple/lilac face and an ecru face. Between these two layers there is a layer of air. This trapped air acts as insulation - the same principle as double glazing. The result is a shawl that feels airy and lightweight but provides more warmth than its weight would suggest. Both faces are finished and wearable: worn with the purple face out for a bolder look, or the ecru face out for a quieter, more neutral one.
Dimensions:
36cm wide, 168cm long, 18cm twisted fringe
At 36cm wide and 168cm long this shawl is generously proportioned. The 18cm twisted fringe at each end is the longest fringe in Emma’s collection - it adds movement and a traditional woven character to the shawl ends. After weaving, the fringes were twisted and the fabric was washed to full and soften the merino.

Hand wash gently in hand-hot water with minimal agitation. Rinse once, press between towels to remove excess water, and dry flat away from direct heat. If pressing is needed, press the woven body lightly while still slightly damp - avoid pressing the twisted fringe. Do not machine wash, wring or tumble dry.
