The Overshot weave
The table mats are woven using a 4-shaft Overshot structure with a 97-row repeat. Overshot is one of the oldest weave structures in the Western handweaving tradition: supplementary weft threads float over multiple warp threads to create raised, clearly defined geometric shapes on the surface of the fabric. The navy weft floats create the pattern against the natural cotton ground, producing a two-colour geometric surface. The 97-row repeat means the motif builds slowly across the cloth before beginning again — a long, complex repeat that produces an intricate, varied design rather than a simple block pattern.
