A handwoven tartan twill merino shawl in navy, blue, orange, brown and beige - Emma Baker’s own original tartan design, made in Salisbury
This shawl is woven by Emma Baker on her Louet floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using fine 2/17nm merino lambswool. The tartan pattern - in navy, blue, orange, brown and beige is an original design by Emma, woven in a twill structure on the floor loom. This is not a traditional clan tartan or licensed pattern, but a design made specifically for this shawl in Emma’s palette.
Five-colour tartan twill
The five colours interact in the twill structure to create the characteristic diagonal texture of twill weave overlaid with the checked arrangement of the tartan. The orange, navy and blue produce a bold contrast within the pattern; the brown and beige add warmth and neutrality. After weaving, the fabric was washed to full and soften the merino.
