A generous shawl woven by hand using fine merino lambswool in a large patterned design using a range of sea blue colours with a flash of orange.  The bold geometric design creates a statement accessory which would look great with a coat outdoors or indoors as a vibrant and colourful piece.

Merino lambswool is one of the finest natural fibres available for accessories as it is  exceptionally soft against the skin, warm without bulk.  The wool is naturally breathable and comfortable across seasons.  As this is handwoven this shawl is a true one of a kind: the tension, the colour balance and the drape of the finished cloth are all outcomes of the making process. No two pieces from the same warp are identical.  There are two variations of this shawl - use the drop down menu to see each shawl.

Frequently Asked Questions -  Handwoven Merino Lambswool Scarf

What colours are in this scarf?

The shawl is woven in navy blue, teal, turquoise and orange large checked pattern. The  colours are woven together in a geometric check - the navy and blue are dominant with the orange and turquoise acting as vibrant accents that life the colour palette. It is a bold, contemporary colourway that works well with neutral outerwear (grey, navy, cream, camel) and equally well as a statement piece against a plain background.

What is merino lambswool and is it soft?

Merino lambswool is wool from the first shearing of a merino sheep, which produces an exceptionally fine and soft fibre. Merino wool in general has a lower micron count than standard wool - meaning the individual fibres are finer - which is why it does not itch or scratch in the way that coarser wools can. Lambswool specifically has an additional softness and a natural spring that makes it comfortable to wear directly against the skin. This shawl is made from 100% fine merino lambswool throughout.

How is this scarf different from a shop-bought checked scarf?

A shop-bought checked shawl is typically made from fabric woven in a mill at scale, in a standard colourway that may be repeated across thousands of units. Emma weaves the fabric for this shawl herself on a floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire - she sets the warp, chooses the yarn colours, and weaves each piece by hand.  Because the weaving is done by hand, the tension, drape and texture of the finished cloth are the direct result of the making process. No two pieces are identical.

How do I care for a merino lambswool scarf?

Hand wash in cool water with a wool-safe detergent and minimal agitation - do not rub or wring the fabric. Rinse once and dry flat; do not hang to dry as this may stretch the weave. Do not machine wash or tumble dry. For routine freshening, airing the scarf is usually sufficient and hand washing should only be needed occasionally. If you spot a small stain, sponge it gently with a damp cloth before it sets.

Is this shawl suitable as a gift?

Yes. It sits in the mid-range of the collection and makes a substantial gift for a birthday, Christmas, retirement or special occasion. The bold checked colourway is distinctive enough to feel considered rather than generic, and the handwoven provenance - made by a single maker on a floor loom in Wiltshire - gives it a story that a mass-produced accessory cannot offer. Every order arrives in Emma’s branded gift packaging as standard, so no additional wrapping is needed.
