A handwoven deflected doubleweave merino scarf in mint green, emerald, white and electric blue - reversible, open-structure warmth

This merino scarf is woven by Emma Baker on a floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using a deflected doubleweave structure in two shades of green - pale mint and rich emerald with white and an accent of bright electric blue. The electric blue appears as a vivid spark against the greens: surprising, carefully placed, and visible without overpowering the overall palette.

Why an open-structure deflected doubleweave scarf is warm

The deflected doubleweave structure creates two layers of fabric with air pockets between them. Those air pockets trap warm air close to the body - the same principle as double-glazing, where the insulation comes from the trapped air rather than from the material itself. This is why a lightweight, open-structure deflected doubleweave scarf can be significantly warmer than a heavier plain-weave scarf of the same fibre: the warmth is structural. The drape is airy; the warmth is real.

Reversible - two looks from one scarf

The deflected doubleweave distributes the colours differently on each face of the fabric. The mint, emerald, white and electric blue appear in a different arrangement on each side. The scarf can be worn with either face on the outside, giving two visually distinct looks from a single piece.
