A handwoven Falkland merino and silk snood - 75% Falkland merino, 25% silk, hand-dyed
This snood is woven by Emma Baker on an 8-shaft floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using a hand-dyed yarn of 75% Falkland merino wool and 25% silk. The fibre blend gives the snood qualities that pure merino alone cannot produce: the Falkland merino provides warmth and softness, while the silk adds a natural sheen and a slightly more fluid drape. After weaving, the fabric is wet-finished - washed to cause the merino fibres to full and soften producing a denser, softer fabric than the woven-but-unwashed cloth.
Falkland merino and silk - why this blend matters
Falkland merino comes from the Falkland Islands, where the cold climate and extensive natural grazing produce a wool with particular fineness and a natural lustre. It is a premium variant within the merino family - softer and more luminous than standard merino. Adding 25% silk to the blend introduces a second natural fibre with complementary properties: silk is smooth, has a natural sheen that catches the light differently from wool, and gives the yarn a slightly cooler handle and a drape quality that makes the snood sit and move more fluidly around the neck. The yarn is also hand-dyed, producing colour with a depth and tonal variation that commercial dyeing cannot replicate.
Three design variants
All three variants are woven in the same Falkland merino and silk yarn on an 8-shaft floor loom using a base structure of straight 8 chevron threading. The three variants differ in the weave pattern used across this threading:
Dimensions:
A - 32cm × 71cm
B - 34cm × 74cm

Sponge-wash small marks with a damp cloth. If a full wash is needed, hand wash very gently in hand-hot water with minimal agitation - avoid hot water, which can damage silk fibres. Rinse once. Press between towels to remove excess water and dry flat, away from direct heat and direct sunlight. If pressing is needed, press very lightly while still slightly damp. Do not machine wash, wring or tumble dry.
