A handwoven merino cowl in rich purple, lilac and teal, made by Emma Baker in Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Woven on a traditional 8-shaft floor loom using a deflected doubleweave structure - one of the most technically demanding techniques in hand weaving - this cowl has a quality and depth of texture that machine-made accessories cannot replicate.

What is deflected doubleweave?

Deflected doubleweave creates two separate layers of fabric on the loom simultaneously. The longer warp and weft floats in the pattern cause the fabric to gather and deflect when washed, producing a three-dimensional surface texture that changes slightly with every wash. The structure is also fully reversible - both sides of the cowl are finished and wearable.
