A handwoven hand-spun merino, alpaca and silk scarf in silver grey and black - fibres spun by Emma Baker on an Ashford spinning wheel, woven on a rigid heddle loom in Salisbury
This scarf is hand-spun and handwoven by Emma Baker in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Emma first spun the merino, alpaca and silk fibres together on her Ashford spinning wheel - blending three exceptional natural fibres into a single hand-spun yarn. The yarn was then woven on a rigid heddle loom to create the scarf.
Three fibres, hand-spun together
Merino - Fine merino lambswool is warm, soft and naturally breathable. The structural backbone of the yarn.
Alpaca - Alpaca fibre is lighter and warmer per gram than wool, with a natural lustre and no lanolin so naturally hypoallergenic. It softens the merino handle and adds warmth without weight.
Silk - Silk adds a natural sheen, a smooth, fluid handle, and a cooler, lighter quality. In a hand-spun blend, the silk is not a uniform coating but part of the fibre twist, the sheen catches the light differently across each section of yarn.
Hand-spun variation
Because Emma spun the fibres herself before weaving, this scarf has a natural variation in texture and colour depth across its length that commercially spun yarn cannot replicate. The silver grey and black tones shift subtly as the hand-spun yarn catches the light at different angles. This is a scarf that reveals new detail each time you wear it.

Handwoven Hand-Spun Merino, Alpaca and Silk Scarf - Silver Grey
Hand wash very gently in cool water with minimal agitation - cool water preserves the silk and alpaca fibres. Rinse once, press gently between towels to remove excess water, and dry flat away from direct heat and direct sunlight. If pressing is needed, press very lightly while still slightly damp. Do not machine wash, wring or tumble dry.
