A handwoven Falkland merino and silk snood in mint green and pink - three variants, hand-dyed, 8-shaft floor loom, made by Emma Baker in Salisbury

This snood is woven by Emma Baker on an 8-shaft floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire from a hand-dyed yarn of 75% Falkland merino wool and 25% silk. The Falkland merino comes from the Falkland Islands, where the cold climate and natural grazing produce a wool with particular fineness and a natural lustre. The 25% silk adds a natural sheen, a slightly cooler handle, and a fluid drape that pure merino cannot achieve alone. Three variants are available, each using the same yarn but with different constructions, dimensions and colour accents.

Three variants - choose the one that suits you

Variant B - Mint & Pink Wide (34cm × 74cm)  The widest and longest of the four.  Standard loop. The most generous drape of the variants.

Variant C - Mint, Pink & Lilac Infinity Twist (17cm × 74cm)  A significantly narrower snood sewn with an infinity twist - the fabric is given a single twist before the ends are joined, creating a figure-of-eight loop that sits with a natural turn at the neck. At 17cm wide this variant is closer in character to a slim fitted cowl than a wider loose snood. It has lilac stripes woven into the mint and pink ground, giving it the most distinctive visual character of the four.

Variant D - Mint, Pink & Lilac Warp (33cm × 70cm)  Similar in construction to Variant B but with subtle lilac shades threaded into the warp in the centre of the weave.

The yarn - Falkland merino and silk, hand-dyed

The 75% Falkland merino and 25% silk blend is hand-dyed in the mint green and pink colourway before weaving, so the colour is in the fibre itself rather than applied to the surface. Hand-dyeing produces a depth of tone and subtle variation that commercially dyed yarn cannot replicate. The silk content gives the snood a natural sheen that catches the light as the snood moves, and a drape quality that makes it sit more fluidly around the neck than a pure wool snood.

  • Sponge-wash small marks with a damp cloth. If a full wash is needed, hand wash very gently in hand-hot water with minimal agitation - avoid hot water, which can damage silk fibres. Rinse once. Press between towels to remove excess water and dry flat, away from direct heat and direct sunlight. If pressing is needed, press very lightly while still slightly damp. Do not machine wash, wring or tumble dry.
