A handwoven blue and orange merino fusion cowl - four deflected doubleweave designs, repurposed merino jersey join, infinity twist, made by Emma Baker in Salisbury.

This fusion cowl is woven by Emma Baker on her Louet floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using four different deflected doubleweave 8-shaft designs across the 14cm width. The woven body in orange and blue 2/17nm merino lambswool is then joined with a complementary blue repurposed merino lambswool jersey tube, which is sewn into an infinity twist to create the cowl.

Four deflected doubleweave designs

Using four different deflected doubleweave patterns across a 14cm width means each pattern zone is approximately 3.5cm wide - dense structural variety for the scale of the piece. The four designs produce different surface characters: different tile arrangements, different colour distributions, different texture qualities, all within the same orange and blue palette. This is the same level of structural complexity as the navy/white cowl in Emma’s collection, compressed into a much narrower format.

Repurposed merino join - a sustainability note

The blue knitted tube that forms the join and enables the infinity twist is made from repurposed merino lambswool jersey fabric - existing material given a new purpose as part of the cowl’s construction. This is the same approach as the plum pink snood and one variant of the navy/yellow snood in Emma’s collection: a considered use of existing material rather than new.

Slim and fitted - 14cm wide

At 14cm wide and 77cm in circumference, this cowl is the slimmest accessory in Emma’s collection. Where a standard snood drapes loosely, this cowl sits fitted at the neck, providing targeted warmth without bulk. It sits more like a close-fitting collar than a traditional snood - a different wearing character suited to people who prefer a sleeker, less layered neck accessory.
