A handwoven striped twill merino scarf in beige, dark green, red, oatmeal and cream - made by Emma Baker in Salisbury

This scarf is woven by Emma Baker on a Louet floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using fine 2/17nm merino lambswool. The stripe pattern comes from the warp - five colours (beige, dark green, red, oatmeal and cream) are arranged in sequence on the loom before weaving begins, and the pale beige weft passes through them to create the striped surface. The twill structure adds a diagonal texture to each stripe: rather than the weft simply passing over and under the warp in alternating rows, it passes over two or more warp threads in a staggered sequence, creating the characteristic diagonal lines that run within and across the stripes.

Wet-finished after weaving

After weaving, the fabric was washed in warm water to remove the merino yarn’s spinning oils. This wet-finishing process causes the merino fibres to full slightly - interlock at a microscopic level, creating a fabric that is softer, warmer and more cohesive than an unwashed equivalent. The fulling also gives the scarf a slight bloomed surface texture that catches the light differently from a flat woven cloth.

Unisex and wardrobe-versatile

The beige, dark green, red and oatmeal palette is one of the most wardrobe-neutral combinations in the collection. It coordinates with red, green, camel, brown, navy and charcoal outfits - colours that appear throughout both men’s and women’s wardrobes. This is an explicitly unisex scarf: the stripe arrangement and the earth-toned palette work equally well with a tailored coat or a casual jacket, for men and women alike.
