A handwoven snood with a hand-spun merino weft and a British wool warp - twill design in orange, purple and turquoise, made by Emma Baker in Salisbury

This snood is woven by Emma Baker on a rigid heddle loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire. The weft - the yarn passed through the loom during weaving, and the yarn that sits against the skin when the snood is worn - is merino that Emma has hand-spun herself. The warp threads strung on the loom before weaving begins is British wool: traceable to UK farms and UK sheep breeds.

Two wools, two provenances

The hand-spun merino weft gives the snood’s surface a natural variation in texture and colour depth that commercially spun yarn cannot replicate. Emma spins the merino fibre on a spinning wheel before weaving - the yarn is her own creation, not a commercial product.  The British wool warp provides the structural backbone of the snood. British wool comes from UK sheep breeds, supporting domestic farming and providing a traceable UK provenance. The combination of hand-spun merino and British wool is unique in this collection and means every element of this snood was produced in the UK.

Orange, purple and turquoise in a twill design

The three colours - warm orange, rich purple and vivid turquoise are woven into the snood in a twill design. Twill produces a fabric with a diagonal interlacing structure that gives the surface a slight texture and a subtle directional quality. The combination of three distinct colours in a twill arrangement creates a snood with a depth and visual complexity that changes as the light falls across it. Each snood is one of a kind: because the weft is hand-spun, no two snoods have quite the same surface character.

  • Sponge-wash small marks with a damp cloth. If a full wash is needed, hand wash very gently in hand-hot water with minimal agitation - the hand-spun yarn can be more susceptible to felting than commercial yarn, so keep agitation to a minimum. Rinse once. Press between towels to remove excess water and dry flat, away from direct heat and direct sunlight. Do not machine wash, wring or tumble dry.
