Beautifully soft and cosy pink and green scarf woven with hand spun merino fibres and botony wool.

This scarf begins before the loom. The yarn is hand-spun by Emma from botany fibre -predominantly merino wool recovered from the early stages of textile processing  before being wound onto the warp and woven by hand on a rigid heddle loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire. The result is a fabric with a texture and softness that machine-spun yarn cannot replicate: slightly irregular in the way that hand-spun yarn always is, and warm in a way that reflects the quality of the merino fibre.

The colours are bright pink and green in a checked structure. No two scarves made from hand-spun yarn are identical - this is a genuinely one-of-a-kind piece.

Frequently Asked Questions - Hand Spun Merino Wool Scarf

What does hand spun mean, and why does it matter?

Most woven scarves are made from yarn that has been commercially spun in a mill - a consistent, machine-produced thread. Emma spins the yarn herself before weaving with it. This means she controls the thickness, the twist and the texture of the thread from the very beginning of the making process. Hand-spun yarn has a slight irregularity that gives the finished fabric a character and warmth that mill-spun yarn cannot replicate. It also means this scarf genuinely did not exist before Emma made it - it is one of a kind in the fullest sense.

What is botany wool?

Botany wool refers to fine merino wool fibres recovered from the early stages of textile processing - the short fibres separated out when longer fibres are combed for worsted spinning. Despite the name 'waste', botany fibre is high-quality merino; it is the softness and fineness of the fibre that makes it suitable for hand-spinning rather than any deficiency in the material. The resulting yarn is soft, warm and has a gentle halo that gives the woven fabric its characteristic texture.

Is this scarf scratchy?

No. Merino wool is one of the softest natural fibres available and is suitable for wearing directly against the skin for most people. The fine botany merino used in this scarf has a low micron count - the finer the fibre, the softer the feel.

How big is the scarf?

The scarf measures 21cm wide by 160cm long, with a 10cm twisted fringe at each end. This is a standard scarf width - wide enough to wrap once and tie, or to wear draped. The fringe is twisted rather than knotted, which gives a cleaner finish than a cut fringe.

Can I wash this scarf at home?

Yes, with care. Hand wash in cool water with a wool-safe detergent and minimal agitation - do not rub or wring. Rinse once and dry flat; do not hang to dry as this may stretch the yarn. Do not machine wash or tumble dry. For everyday maintenance, airing the scarf is usually sufficient; hand washing should only be needed occasionally.

Will this scarf be available again if I miss it?

No - not in this form. Because Emma spins the yarn herself and weaves each piece from scratch, every scarf is made from a unique length of cloth. Even if Emma used the same coloured fibres again, the resulting yarn and weave would be different. Once this piece sells, it cannot be replicated exactly. If you are interested but unsure, contacting Emma directly is the best way to discuss whether a commissioned piece in a similar colourway might be possible.

Is this a good gift?

Yes, particularly for someone who appreciates craft or handmade objects. The hand-spinning process gives this scarf a provenance and a story that a mass-produced accessory cannot offer. It sits at an accessible price for a genuinely one-of-a-kind handmade textile. It arrives in Emma’s branded gift packaging as standard, so no additional wrapping is needed. It works well as a birthday, Christmas or occasion gift, and the bright pink and green colourway is distinctive enough to feel considered rather than generic.
