A generously sized cloth woven on a traditional floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using fine merino lambswool in navy, with accent threads of green, red and white forming the classic tartan sett.
This handwoven navy tartan scarf is one of the largest and most substantial pieces in Emma Baker’s collection. At 204cm long and 38cm wide, it is large enough to wrap fully around the neck, drape across both shoulders as a shawl, or fold into a thick scarf for serious warmth. Each end is finished with a 1cm fringe - a traditional, intentional detail characteristic of handwoven cloth.
The Making of It
Weaving a scarf of this size takes significant time. The warp - the vertical threads that run the length of the loom must be individually measured, threaded, and tensioned before a single weft thread is passed through. The tartan pattern is built by alternating the navy, green, red and white threads in a precise sequence across both the warp and the weft, so that the characteristic checked design emerges from the structure of the weave itself rather than being printed or applied.
After weaving, the cloth is washed to full and finish the fabric - a process that causes the fibres to bloom together, softening the hand of the cloth and giving it the weight and drape of a finished textile.
Why Merino Wool?
Fine merino lambswool is one of the best choices for a scarf worn next to the skin. Its fibres are considerably finer than standard wool, giving it a softness that does not itch or irritate even on the neck. It is naturally warm without being heavy, breathes across a range of temperatures, and is durable enough to last for many years with proper care.
A Scarf for Everyone
The navy tartan colourway is one of the most versatile in the collection. Navy is a strong neutral that works across most wardrobes, and the classic tartan design sits equally well with smart and casual dress. The scarf is unisex - well suited as a gift for men or women, and a strong choice for anyone who appreciates traditional British textile craft.
A Gift Worth £150
This scarf is sold in a gold embossed gift box, presented and ready to give. At £150 it is one of the most significant pieces in the collection - appropriate for a landmark birthday, a retirement, a wedding anniversary, or anyone who deserves something genuinely exceptional. When you buy from Emma Baker Handwoven Textiles, you are buying directly from the maker: a single piece, made by hand, with no equivalent anywhere else.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between tartan and plaid?
Tartan refers to a specific pattern of crossing horizontal and vertical stripes in multiple colours, traditionally associated with Scottish clan identity. Plaid is the American term for the same type of pattern - in the UK, “plaid” historically referred to the large woollen cloth worn as a garment in the Scottish Highlands. The two terms are now used interchangeably in most contexts. This scarf is woven in a tartan sett using navy as the ground colour with green, red and white accent threads.
Can this scarf be worn as a shawl?
Yes. At 204cm long and 38cm wide it is large enough to drape fully across both shoulders, making it versatile as both a scarf and a wrap. It is particularly well suited to layering over a coat or jacket in colder weather.
Is this a unisex scarf?
Yes. The navy tartan colourway and generous proportions work equally well for men and women. It is a strong gift choice for either.
Will merino wool itch?
No. Fine merino lambswool has a much finer fibre diameter than standard wool, so the fibres bend against the skin rather than prickling it. Most people who find ordinary wool uncomfortable have no problem with fine merino.
How do I care for this scarf?
Handwash very gently in warm water with minimal agitation, using a wool-safe detergent. Rinse once, press gently in a towel to remove excess water, and dry flat. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, or wring. Press lightly with a cool iron if needed.
Is this scarf made in the UK?
Yes. The scarf is designed and handwoven by Emma Baker in her studio in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. Emma Baker Handwoven Textiles ships to the UK, Canada, and the USA.
