A handwoven zig-zag deflected doubleweave merino snood in purple, teal, navy and white - variegated sock wool weft that shifts colour along its length, made by Emma Baker in Salisbury
This snood is woven by Emma Baker on a floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using a deflected doubleweave structure that creates a striking zig-zag geometric pattern. The zig-zag emerges from the interaction of two yarns: a navy and white merino lambswool warp, and a variegated merino/nylon sock wool weft in purple, teal and green. The gradational weft yarn shifts colour along its length - purple grades into teal, teal into green - and as this happens across the 72cm circumference of the snood, the colour balance shifts too. One part of the loop shows more purple; another more teal or green. The zig-zag pattern sits across all these colour shifts simultaneously.
Two yarns, one pattern
The warp (the structural threads strung on the loom before weaving) is a navy and white merino lambswool - these are the colours that form the geometric skeleton of the zig-zag. The weft (the threads passed through during weaving) is a variegated merino/nylon sock wool: a yarn that transitions through purple, teal and green in a gradational sequence. When the zig-zag pattern deflects these weft threads between the two cloth layers of the doubleweave, the colour from wherever the weft currently sits in its colour run appears on that face of the cloth. The result is a snood where the zig-zag geometry comes from the warp arrangement and the colour variation comes from the weft yarn’s natural colour run.
What makes this snood special
- Handwoven by Emma Baker in Salisbury, Wiltshire on a floor loom
- Deflected doubleweave - the zig-zag geometric pattern comes from the warp structure

- Variegated merino/nylon sock wool weft in purple, teal and green - the yarn shifts colour along its length
- The colour shift means the snood looks different depending on which part of the loop faces forward

Zig-Zag Handwoven Merino Snood - Purple, Teal, Navy and White
Sponge wash any small stains with a damp cloth. Hand wash very gently in hand-hot water with minimal agitation - the merino content sets the temperature. Rinse once, press between towels to remove excess water, and dry flat away from direct heat. If pressing is needed, press lightly while still slightly damp. Do not machine wash, wring or tumble dry.
