A handwoven deflected doubleweave mosaic merino scarf in yellow and three shades of blue - 230cm long, made by Emma Baker in Salisbury
This scarf is woven by Emma Baker on an 8-shaft floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using a deflected doubleweave mosaic design in bright yellow merino lambswool and three shades of blue. At 25cm wide and 230cm long it is one of the most generous scarves in Emma’s collection - long enough to drape across both shoulders, to wrap twice around the neck, or to loop and knot as a statement piece.
How the colour-mixing works - two shuttles, 6-row alternation
The mosaic pattern is created using two shuttles: one carrying bright yellow yarn, one carrying blue yarn. Emma alternates between the two shuttles every 6 weft rows. This specific rhythm, switching shuttles at the 6-row interval is what produces the colour-mixing effect in the mosaic pattern: the yellow and blue yarns appear in different proportions across the tile blocks depending on where in the 6-row cycle they fall. The result is a mosaic where no two tile blocks have exactly the same colour balance, giving the pattern a depth and variety that a single-shuttle version of the same pattern could not produce.
Bold enough to be a statement piece
The bright yellow gives this scarf a strong, immediate presence - what you might call a yellow pop. It is bold enough to be the defining element of an outfit and works with grey, navy, charcoal, black and white as clean contrast backgrounds. The three shades of blue in the mosaic give the blue portions of the pattern depth and variety: the tiles shift between navy, mid-blue and bright blue as the 6-row rhythm moves through the pattern.
