Handwoven wool coasters made from reclaimed mill yarn and local heritage fleece - made by Emma Baker in Salisbury. Pair of two.

These 13cm square coasters are woven by Emma Baker on a floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using a twill design in blue, brown, green and burgundy woollen yarns. After weaving, the fabric is washed in a hot wash to cause the wool fibres to felt and interlock creating a denser, more stable cloth. The edges are then cut neatly to produce a characteristic frayed border on each side. Each pair is unique: the colour arrangement and yarn combination varies between lettered pairs.

Two material stories

Reclaimed mill yarn (Pairs D, E, G, H, I, J, K and L)  These pairs are woven from reclaimed mill woollen yarn - yarn recovered from the wool processing industry that would otherwise be treated as waste. Using reclaimed yarn closes a loop in the production process: industrial by-product becomes a handcrafted domestic object.

Local handspun heritage fleece (Pairs B and M)  These pairs include handspun yarn from local Zwartbles and Jacob sheep. Zwartbles are a UK-established black-and-white heritage breed with a fine, lustrous fleece; Jacob are an ancient multi-horned UK breed with a distinctive spotted fleece. The fleece was spun by hand before being incorporated into the warp or weft alongside the reclaimed yarn, adding local provenance at the breed level.

Hot-wash felted edges

After weaving, the fabric is washed in a hot wash to felt the wool fibres - causing them to interlock and creating a denser, slightly thicker cloth that holds its shape as a coaster. The edges are cut after felting, producing the characteristic frayed border that gives the coasters their artisanal, rustic character.

  • Spot clean with a damp cloth for everyday marks. If a full wash is needed, hand wash gently in cool water or machine wash on a delicate cycle at 30°C - the felting process has already stabilised the wool fibres. Reshape while damp and dry flat. Do not tumble dry.
