This handwoven teal and sea blue cotton snood is woven by Emma Baker on a floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire, inspired by the shifting tones of the ocean - the deep teals, pale blues, and sea greens that change with the light and the tide. The colours are worked in DK cotton across a range of blue shades, producing a cloth with a softness and depth that changes depending on how the light falls on it.
Why Cotton?
Unlike the merino wool snoods in this collection, this snood is woven in cotton - a deliberate choice for year-round wearability. Cotton is breathable and lightweight in a way that wool is not, making it comfortable in warmer weather, at the shoulder-season transitions, and indoors without overheating. It is also easier to wash than wool: machine wash on a gentle cycle and it will come out well. If you want a snood you can wear from March through to October as well as on mild winter days, cotton is the right choice.
The Two Constructions
Two very different snood formats are available from the same handwoven cloth. Select your preferred option from the Fabric dropdown before adding to your basket.
Snoods A, B and C — Infinity Twist (18cm × 73cm) The fabric has been sewn into a tube and then joined with a single twist before seaming, creating the classic infinity scarf shape. This construction produces a smaller, snugger snood that sits close to the neck and can be looped twice for extra warmth. It is the more compact of the two formats.
Snoods D and E — Flat Circle (36cm × 71cm) The fabric has been sewn into a simple circle without a twist, so it lies flat when folded. This is the larger format — it drapes more loosely around the neck and can be worn as a single loop or doubled. It also works as a light hood on breezy days.
Dimensions A, B and C: approximately 18cm × 73cm. D and E: approximately 36cm × 71cm.
A Gift Ready to Give At £45 this snood arrives in a branded gift box, presented and ready to give. The ocean-inspired colourway makes it a distinctive and considered gift for anyone who gravitates towards blue and teal tones. You can read more about the making of this collection in the blog.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an infinity snood and a flat-circle snood? An infinity snood has a single twist sewn into the join, which gives it a figure-of-eight loop shape when laid flat. This means it wraps around the neck in a slightly different way from a plain circle - it tends to sit closer and feel snugger. A flat-circle snood has no twist and drapes more loosely. Neither is better; it is a matter of personal preference and how you like to wear a snood.
Is cotton suitable for a snood in winter? Cotton is lighter and less insulating than wool, so it is not the best choice for very cold weather. It works well in mild winter conditions, indoors, and in the shoulder seasons. For a warmer snood suitable for mid-winter, the merino wool snoods in the collection would be a better choice.
How do I wash a cotton snood? Machine wash on a gentle cycle at 30°C. Reshape while damp and dry flat or on a hanger. Cotton can shrink slightly at higher temperatures so avoid hot washes.
What is a snood? A snood is a loop-shaped scarf - a continuous tube of fabric with no ends. It slips over the head and sits around the neck without needing to be tied or tucked. It can be worn as a single loop close to the neck or doubled up for extra warmth.
