A handwoven deflected doubleweave mosaic merino scarf in red, navy, burgundy and brown - reversible, 186cm, made by Emma Baker in Salisbury
This scarf is handwoven by Emma Baker on her Louet floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using an 8-shaft deflected doubleweave mosaic structure in fine merino lambswool. The four colours - red, navy, burgundy and a small amount of brown are distributed across the mosaic tile pattern. The deflected doubleweave builds two cloth layers simultaneously, and both faces are woven and finished: the scarf is reversible, with the colour balance and pattern arrangement differing between the two faces.
Wet-finished merino
After weaving, the fabric was washed. The heat and moisture cause the merino fibres to full, interlock slightly, making the cloth noticeably softer, warmer and more cohesive than the freshly woven fabric. The fulling gives this scarf its characteristic soft, plump handle.
