A handwoven deflected doubleweave zig-zag merino snood in pink, brown, burgundy and beige - fray detail seam, made by Emma Baker in Salisbury
This snood is woven by Emma Baker on a Louet floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using a deflected doubleweave pattern on 8 shafts in fine merino lambswool. The zig-zag pattern emerges from the deflected doubleweave structure: the weft threads are periodically deflected between the two cloth layers, creating the characteristic diagonal zig-zag geometry across the surface. The four colours - pink, brown, burgundy and beige are distributed in the zig-zag pattern, with the balance shifting as the colours are used in different proportions across each section.
Fray detail seam - a deliberate design feature
After weaving, the fabric is washed, gently pressed, and sewn into a circle. The seam is finished with a deliberate fray detail along the join on one side - the seam allowance is left visible rather than concealed, creating a textural, artisanal edge that complements the zig-zag deflected doubleweave surface. This fray detail is a design choice unique in Emma’s snood collection.

Sponge wash any small stains with a damp cloth. Hand wash very gently in hand-hot water with minimal agitation - take care not to pull the fray detail at the seam. Rinse once, press between towels to remove excess water, and dry flat away from direct heat. If pressing is needed, press lightly while still slightly damp. Do not machine wash, wring or tumble dry.
