A handwoven deflected doubleweave merino snood - reversible, two designs in one.
 
This merino snood is woven by Emma Baker on an 8-shaft floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using a deflected doubleweave structure - a technique that produces a two-sided fabric with a different design on each face. The snood is sewn so that either side can be worn on the outside, giving the wearer two distinct looks from a single accessory.
 
What is deflected doubleweave?
Deflected doubleweave is a complex weave structure that requires at least 8 shafts on a floor loom. Two layers of fabric are woven simultaneously, with the weft threads deflected - pulled across between the layers in a controlled pattern to create curves and organic shapes that flat weave structures cannot produce. The result is a fabric with a soft, airy structure, a subtle three-dimensional quality, and a different visual character on each face. It is significantly more technically demanding than plain weave or twill, and it is the technique that gives this snood its distinctive texture and its reversibility.  The 8-shaft floor loom setup required for deflected doubleweave takes considerably longer to thread and tension than a simpler loom configuration - this is part of what is reflected in the £65 price.
