This scarf is woven by Emma Baker on a Louet floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using 100% fine merino lambswool in a range of orange and blue shades. The design is a twill check - the diagonal interlacing of the twill structure combined with the square colour arrangement of the check creates a fabric with a strong, graphic surface character.
The twill check structure
Twill weave creates a diagonal interlacing pattern: the weft threads pass over and under warp threads in a staggered sequence, producing the characteristic diagonal lines that run across the fabric surface. The check element superimposes a square colour arrangement over this diagonal structure. The combination produces a fabric that has both the texture of a twill and the visual geometry of a check - what the images show as the 'square' pattern is the check; the diagonal lines visible within each square are the twill structure. After weaving, the fabric was removed from the loom, washed to full and carefully finished.

Handwoven Orange and Blue Merino Scarf - Twill Check
Sponge wash any small stains with a damp cloth. Hand wash very gently in hand-hot water with minimal agitation, rinse once, press between towels to remove excess water, and dry flat away from direct heat. If pressing is needed, press lightly while still slightly damp. Do not machine wash, wring or tumble dry.
