A handwoven ocean-blue and teal cotton scarf - one of a kind, woven on a Louet floor loom in Salisbury
From inky navy to deep teal and soft aqua, misty blue-grey and crisp sky blue - this scarf captures the shifting colours of the sea in all their depth and movement. Each shade was chosen by Emma Baker to sit in the same tonal family as the ocean on an overcast day: the colours move across the fabric as the light changes, the way water does.
How it is woven
Woven by Emma Baker on a Louet floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using an 8-shaft diagonal weave structure. The diagonal weave interlaces the warp and weft threads at an angle rather than at right angles, producing a fabric with a subtle directional texture across the surface - the weave catches the light differently depending on how the scarf is draped, giving it a visual depth that plain weave cannot achieve. The 8-shaft loom setup allows for a more complex pattern threading than a simpler loom would permit. Emma has written about the making of this collection on the blog
