A handwoven merino snood with four different deflected doubleweave designs across its width woven with navy, blue and white yarn by Emma Baker in Salisbury

This reversible snood is woven by Emma on a floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using a complex 8-shaft structure. What makes it exceptional is the number of different weave structures in a single piece of cloth: four different deflected doubleweave designs run across the 29cm width, each producing a distinct surface pattern zone in the same navy, blue and white merino lambswool.

Four designs, one cloth

Deflected doubleweave builds two cloth layers simultaneously on 8 shafts, with the weft threads periodically deflected between the layers to create the pattern on the surface. Using four different deflected doubleweave designs in alternating sections of the same piece of fabric means four different pattern zones are woven side by side. The effect across the width of the snood is a visually rich, textured surface with four distinct but related geometric characters - each zone is different, but all are made from the same navy, blue and white merino.

Reversible

The deflected doubleweave structure produces a genuinely two-sided fabric: both faces of the cloth are woven simultaneously, both are finished, and both can be worn on the outside. The four designs have corresponding but different-looking arrangements on the reverse. Wearing the snood the other way round gives a different colour balance and pattern character.

Wet-finished for exceptional softness

After weaving, the fabric was washed to remove the spinning oils from the merino yarn, causing the fibres to full and plump up. Fulling - the process where wool fibres interlock under heat and moisture transforms the fresh woven cloth into a fabric that is noticeably softer, warmer and more cohesive than unwashed wool. The result is a snood that feels substantially softer.

Compact and foldable

The snood is sewn in a circle without a twist, which means it lies flat when folded and can be compressed into a small space - easy to slip into a bag and pull out when needed.
