A large handwoven deflected doubleweave merino shawl in navy, lilac and silver grey, made by Emma Baker in Salisbury

This shawl is woven by Emma Baker on a floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using a deflected doubleweave structure in fine merino lambswool. The colour palette - deep navy, soft lilac and silver grey is woven in a honeycomb-inspired pattern: the deflected doubleweave creates a surface of regular geometric cells that have a visual rhythm distinct from the flowing, organic shapes of standard deflected doubleweave. The result is a shawl with a structured, contemporary geometric character and a three-dimensional surface that catches the light.

A generous shawl - 1.94m long

At 40cm wide and 1.94m long (plus 5cm fringes at each end), this is a substantially larger piece than a standard scarf. The length allows it to be worn as a true shawl - draped over the shoulders, wrapped around the body, or worn multiple ways depending on the occasion. The deflected doubleweave structure gives the fabric warmth without weight: the two-layer cloth traps air in the same way as a honeycomb traps air in each cell, providing insulation that is disproportionate to the fabric’s apparent lightness.

Reversible

The deflected doubleweave structure produces a genuinely two-sided fabric: both faces of the cloth are woven simultaneously, both are finished, and both can be worn on the outside. The four designs have corresponding but different-looking arrangements on the reverse. Wearing the snood the other way round gives a different colour balance and pattern character.

  • Sponge-wash small marks with a damp cloth. If a full wash is needed, hand wash very gently in cool water with minimal agitation - cool water is correct for this fine merino. Rinse once. Press between towels to remove excess water and dry flat, away from direct heat. If pressing is needed, press lightly while still slightly damp using a pressing cloth. Do not machine wash, wring or tumble dry.
