A handwoven merino scarf in orange and blue - made by Emma Baker in Salisbury, Wiltshire.
Woven on a Louet floor loom using an 8-shaft deflected doubleweave structure, this is a slow-made piece: the kind of scarf that takes days of skilled work to produce and cannot be replicated by any machine.
The deflected doubleweave structure gives the fabric a three-dimensional mosaic surface and makes it fully reversible - the pattern on the reverse is subtly different from the front, giving the scarf two distinct looks.
What is deflected doubleweave?
Deflected doubleweave creates two layers of fabric simultaneously on an 8-shaft loom. The weave includes areas of long warp and weft floats; when the finished scarf is washed, these floats shrink differentially, pulling in different directions to create a raised, softened mosaic pattern across the surface. The effect develops over the first wash and continues to evolve gently with each subsequent wash - making every finished piece genuinely unique.

Three colour variants:
A - Mid blue and mid orange: 24cm × 228cm. The longest variant - a muted, versatile palette for everyday wear.
B - Bright blue and bright orange: 24cm × 198cm. A bolder, more vibrant colourway for maximum colour impact.
C - Indigo blue and bright orange: 24cm × 208cm. The deepest palette - the indigo gives this variant a more dramatic, jewel-toned character.
A gift at the higher end.
This scarf is one of the most substantial pieces in Emma's range - a proper investment in handmade textile art. It suits someone who appreciates the skill behind slow-made accessories and understands why a handwoven deflected doubleweave scarf at this length cannot be made for less. It arrives in a gold-embossed gift box, ready to give.
Handwoven Merino Scarf in Orange and Blue - Deflected Doubleweave
Hand wash gently in hand-hot water with minimal agitation. Rinse once. Press between towels to remove excess water and dry flat, away from direct heat. The deflected mosaic surface will continue to develop gently with subsequent washes — this is a natural characteristic of the technique, not a fault. Do not machine wash, wring or tumble dry.
