A handwoven orange and blue tartan merino snood - Emma’s own tartan design, reversible

This tartan snood is woven by Emma Baker on her Louet floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire from a twill tartan design created by Emma herself.  The orange and blue colourway was chosen as a contemporary, wearable tartan rather than a traditional clan pattern: the orange, navy, blue, brown and beige tones combine to create a tartan with warmth and versatility that works with a wide range of outfits.

The twill tartan structure

Tartan is woven on a twill structure: the warp and weft threads interlace in a diagonal pattern rather than at right angles, creating the characteristic diagonal line that runs beneath the tartan’s colour blocks and gives the fabric its slightly textured, structured surface. The colour pattern of the tartan is set by the arrangement of coloured threads in both the warp and weft - when the diagonal weft threads cross the diagonal warp threads, the intersecting colours create the tartan grid.  Emma’s yarn for this snood is a fine 2-ply merino lambswool in five colours: orange, navy, blue, brown and beige. After weaving, the fabric was washed to cause the merino fibres to full slightly and soften - the same wet-finishing process used on several other snoods in this collection.

Reversible - two wearing options

The snood has been sewn with a 1cm fray detail on one side. It is reversible: the fray detail face has a relaxed, artisanal character - slightly casual and distinctive; the concealed seam face gives a neater finish more suited to smart-casual outfits. Both faces show the full tartan pattern. Choose whichever side suits the occasion.

A beautiful unique gift
