A handwoven merino scarf in orange and pale blue woven using a deflected doubleweave design by Emma Baker in Salisbury, Wiltshire.
This scarf has a reversible mosaic patterned weave which has been woven with fine merino lambswool on a Louet floor loom. This is a slow-made piece: the kind of scarf that takes days of skilled work to produce. Its lightweight, airy feel makes it a warm and soft scarf which would be a real statement wardrobe piece and a treasured gift.
What is deflected doubleweave?
Deflected doubleweave creates two layers of fabric simultaneously on an 8-shaft loom. The weave includes areas of long warp and weft floats; when the finished scarf is washed, these floats shrink differentially, pulling in different directions to create a raised, softened mosaic pattern across the surface. The effect develops over the first wash and continues to evolve gently with each subsequent wash - making every finished piece genuinely unique.
