This handwoven merino wool triangle scarf was inspired by the autumnal colours of the New Forest - the heathers, bracken, mossy greens and bare grey bark that define the woodland and open pastures in autumn. The palette of grey, green and deep burgundy-purple is drawn directly from that landscape, and the result is a scarf with a quiet richness that sits naturally with the earth tones of an autumn wardrobe.

Emma Baker weaves this scarf on a floor loom in her Salisbury studio using fine merino lambswool in a turned twill structure - a more complex weave than a standard twill, in which the diagonal direction of the weave reverses to create a chevron or diamond pattern across the surface of the cloth. The result is a fabric with a distinctive visual character and a naturally soft drape.

What Is a Turned Twill?

In a standard twill weave, the diagonal rib runs consistently in one direction across the cloth. In a turned twill, the direction of the diagonal reverses at regular intervals, creating a mirrored or chevron pattern. It requires more complex threading of the loom and produces a more intricate surface than a plain twill. It is the weave structure that gives this scarf its distinctive patterning - subtler than a check, more interesting than a plain diagonal.

The Variants

The two variant are different due to the placement of the colours in the fabric.

Dimensions

Approximately 94cm along the longest edge and 34cm from the centre to the point - a compact neckerchief size that knots and drapes neatly without bulk. All edges are oversewn for a clean, durable finish.

How to Style It

The grey, green and deep burgundy-purple palette pairs particularly well with earth tones - camel, chocolate brown, rust, navy and forest green outerwear all work. The muted character of the colours means it sits quietly alongside bolder pieces without clashing, while still adding a considered layer of warmth and interest. It is a scarf that looks as good with a smart coat as it does with a casual jumper.

A Postable Gift

This is an accessible and thoughtful gift. Because of its compact size it can be sent as a large letter, keeping postage costs low. If you would prefer it presented in a gift box, please contact Emma before purchasing and she will arrange this for a small additional fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you wear a triangle scarf?

Fold it in half along the longest edge to form a strip, wrap it around the neck, and knot or tuck the ends. Or wear it as a true triangle by draping the point down the front and knotting the ends at the back of the neck for a neckerchief look. It can also be tied at the side of the neck, worn over a collar, or looped through a bag handle.

What is a turned twill?

A turned twill is a weave structure where the diagonal direction of the twill reverses at intervals, creating a chevron or diamond pattern across the cloth. It is more complex to set up and weave than a standard twill and produces a more intricate surface texture. It is the weave that gives this scarf its distinctive patterning.

Is merino wool itchy?

No. Fine merino lambswool has a much smaller fibre diameter than standard wool, so the fibres bend against the skin rather than prickling it. Most people who find ordinary wool uncomfortable have no problem wearing fine merino directly against the neck.

How do I care for a merino wool triangle scarf?

Sponge wash small stains. For a full wash, handwash very gently in warm water with minimal agitation using a wool-safe detergent. Rinse once, press in a towel to remove excess water, and dry naturally before pressing lightly. Do not machine wash or tumble dry.

Is this scarf made in the UK?

Yes. The scarf is designed and handwoven by Emma Baker in her studio in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.

Do you ship internationally?
