A handwoven merino wool tie is one of the most distinctive things a man can wear. This tie is woven by Emma Baker in her Salisbury studio on a Louet floor loom, using fine merino lambswool in a vibrant multicolour twill design. No two ties are exactly alike - the fabric is woven by hand, which means the piece you receive carries the kind of character and provenance that machine-made accessories simply cannot match.
It arrives gift boxed, making it ready to give straight away so no extra wrapping needed.
The Colours
Three colour variations are available, all woven from the same fine merino lambswool warp but differing in their weft colours. Select your preferred option from the dropdown before adding to your basket.
- Pale blue weft - a cooler, lighter palette with blue as the dominant weft colour.
- Grey weft - a more neutral, versatile colourway that pairs well with both formal and casual dress.
- Red weft - a bolder, warmer colourway for those who want a real statement piece.
How It Is Made
The fabric is woven on a floor loom using fine merino lambswool in a twill structure - a weave pattern that produces a diagonal rib on the surface of the cloth, giving it both visual interest and excellent drape. After weaving, the fabric is washed to full and finish the cloth, then hand sewn with an interlining and lining to create a properly constructed tie with the right weight and body.
Dimensions
Approximately 162cm long and 10cm at the widest point - a standard tie width that knots and drapes well with both a four-in-hand and a half Windsor.
A Gift Worth Giving
At £55, this tie sits in a strong position for a significant gift - a birthday, Father’s Day, a graduation, or a retirement. Because it is handmade and one of a kind, it carries a thoughtfulness that a shop-bought tie cannot. It comes in a tie gift box, presented and ready to give.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is merino wool suitable for a tie?
Yes. Fine merino lambswool has a soft, smooth handle that works well for a tie - it drapes naturally and does not feel scratchy or stiff. The twill weave structure also gives the fabric good body and recovery, so it holds a knot well.
What is a twill weave?
Twill is a weave structure that creates a diagonal pattern across the surface of the fabric. It is used in many classic textiles including denim, herringbone, and tweed. On a fine merino wool tie, it produces a subtle surface texture that catches the light differently from a plain weave, adding visual depth to the colourway.
How do I care for a merino wool tie?
Spot clean only with a damp cloth. Do not machine wash or tumble dry. If the tie becomes creased, hang it overnight and it will usually drop out naturally. Steam very gently if needed, but do not press directly with an iron.
Is this tie made in the UK?
Yes. The fabric is handwoven and the tie is hand sewn by Emma Baker in her studio in Salisbury, Wiltshire.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. Emma Baker Handwoven Textiles ships to the UK, Canada, and the USA.
