This snood is woven by Emma Baker on a floor loom in Salisbury, Wiltshire using a complex 8-shaft deflected doubleweave structure in fine 2/17nm merino lambswool. The mosaic pattern that gives the snood its distinctive surface character is created during washing: the longer warp and weft floats in the fabric relax under heat and moisture, causing them to deflect and shift the two cloth layers relative to each other. The mosaic pattern is the visible result of this float deflection - it is not in the fabric as woven on the loom but emerges as the fabric is finished.
 
Reversible
The deflected doubleweave structure produces a genuinely two-sided fabric: both faces of the cloth are woven simultaneously and both can be worn on the outside. The colour balance and pattern arrangement are different on each face, giving the snood two distinct looks from a single purchase.
 
Three variations
There are three variations of this snood, both woven from the same 2/17nm merino lambswool yarn.  A and B are the same colourway and C is woven with a navy yarn in place of the brighter electric blue used for A and B.
